Meet Mike

Your progressive voice for downtown

From pursuing my education at UW-Madison, to serving as Chief of Staff for Tammy Baldwin, to practicing law, I’ve been a part of the Downtown Madison community for decades. Downtown residents have placed their confidence in me for many years to be their voice in City Hall. I’m proud to have played a role in the development of downtown to where it is today through:

  • Housing: Championed and passed a “height bonus” ordinance to encourage affordable apartments downtown while strengthening tenant protections, increasing safety regulations, and securing funding for affordable housing and Housing First initiatives.

  • Equity: Led efforts to decriminalize marijuana, expand LGBTQ+ protections, institute paid parental leave, and improve access to sexual and reproductive health services.

  • Sustainability: Advocated for green development, lake preservation, and the Madison LakeWay Project while championing climate action plans to reduce carbon emissions and expand renewable energy.

  • Transportation: Expanded public transit with Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), new routes, and bike lanes while fighting for Amtrak service and a future intercity bus terminal downtown.

I’m honored to have been elected President of the Common Council by my peers on several occasions. In addition to my service on several City committees, I serve on the boards of the following organizations; Capitol Neighborhoods, Inc., Downtown Madison, Inc., Madison’s Central Business Improvement District, and the Overture Center Foundation.

It’s incredibly exciting that these efforts have brought thousands of new residents to our city, but it has also increasingly shed light on the housing crisis Madison is experiencing. As your progressive Downtown Alder, I will continue to work tirelessly to champion policies that increase the amount of safe and affordable rental units, expand pedestrian and bike friendly mobility options, and ensure that downtown Madison is a place where everyone can comfortably and affordably live, work, and thrive.
